03/02/2025 - 14:31
We’re proud to announce the completion of the Station Boxes and Tunnelling (SBT) works for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project. Delivered on schedule, this milestone showcases Ghella’s expertise and commitment to shaping Western Sydney’s transport infrastructure.
Over the last three years, Ghella, in partnership with CPB Contractors as part of the CPBG Joint Venture, has led the charge in achieving extraordinary milestones. The project involved constructing 9.8 kilometres of twin tunnels connecting key locations including St Marys, Orchard Hills, and the new city of Bradfield. Ghella’s tunnelling expertise was instrumental in building five modern station boxes at St Marys, Orchard Hills, Airport Business Park, Airport Terminal, and Bradfield, as well as two service facility shafts at Bringelly and Claremont Meadows. The team also installed 39 cross passages throughout the tunnels and laid 19.6 kilometres of concrete flooring to support the metro rail tracks. To accommodate future expansion, four stub tunnels were constructed at St Marys and Bradfield.
This work has laid the foundation for a cutting-edge metro system that will enhance connectivity and drive growth in Western Sydney. By enabling seamless travel, the new metro line will support businesses and communities alike.
Beyond engineering achievements, the project created 3,380 jobs, with 57% of the workforce sourced locally from Greater Western Sydney. Ghella also provided local workers with valuable construction and tunnelling skills, leaving a lasting legacy that strengthens the region’s construction industry.
Environmental sustainability was a key focus throughout the project. By adopting innovative techniques and adhering to strict environmental standards, the team minimised the project’s ecological footprint while delivering exceptional results. This reflects Ghella’s broader vision of responsible construction practices that align with community and environmental goals.
Awarded the SBT contract in December 2021, Ghella’s role in the CPBG Joint Venture has been defined by exceptional commitment and technical excellence. The project highlights the value of strong partnerships, with Ghella and CPB Contractors working seamlessly together to achieve a shared vision.
The completion of the Station Boxes and Tunnelling works marks a significant step forward for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line. This transformative metro system will improve accessibility, connectivity, and economic growth in Western Sydney, enhancing residents' quality of life and reinforcing the region’s role as a thriving economic hub.
