Central Interceptor TBM arrived in Auckland
11-23-2020
Central Interceptor Tunnel Boring Machine, named Hiwa-i-te-Rangi, has safely arrived in Auckland. The TBM will begin digging the 14.7km wastewater tunnel from Māngere to Grey Lynn in early 2021.
Due to its size, the giant machine has been dismantled before shipping from the manufacturer in Germany.
Last week, the first of 27 trucks began transporting parts of the TBM from Ports of Auckland to the launch site, the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant, where works are currently in progress.
Hiwa-i-te-Rangi will be fully assembled just before its launch in 2021. Once pieced together, it will be 190 meters in length, with an external diameter of 5.45 meters.
